For my magazine, I need to research different types of typography for my magazine. I want to base my magazine on magazines such as:- Paper magazine
- Surfer magazine
- Cornwall today

By doing this I will need to incorporate their different types of typography and research into their different techniques. All of these magazines I want to base mine off, have very similar styles within the typography. If we look at each magazine we can see they all have an bold, immediate masthead, that clearly stands out on the magazine. However we can see the differences within each magazine such as the type of font used. My magazine needs to have typography that fits in with my target audience. The magazine that I wish to create needs to have not only a setting that fits into the region I'm basing it off, but also a hipster look which I wish to create. Therefore by looking at hipster, quirky designs I have established that the typography used for these designs tends to be very simple and follow a certain design throughout. The typical designs consist of bold, simplistic designs with banners and decals that adds to the typography. The images I've included showcase the type of typography I wish to use for my magazine. I want to use this design throughout my magazine, so it is easily identifiable and easy to recognise that its the same regional magazine throughout. I also think this would also fit well with the typical regional magazine design, for example the masthead of Cornwall Today also has the very plain, simplistic, and bold design that makes it look professional. Surfer magazine also incorporates this by using very simple design with the masthead and coverlines. Paper magazine is also a good example with the simplistic mastheads, however does not incorporate the coverline design I wish to include in my magazine. From looking at different types of typography I wish to use for my magazine I have ensured that I pay close attention to these different types of magazines so I can find a certain type of font that will fit in with the type of magazine I wish to create. Fonts such as Jameson and Local Brewery are the types of font I wish to use for my regional magazine. The hipster designs I have included below also show the type of font design I wish to use for my regional magazine. Overall the style of my magazine needs to incorporate a similar design to Cornwall Today which has a very professional and smart look, you can immediately tell by looking at Cornwall Today that the magazine is a regional magazine. This can be seen not only by the images used but also the fonts used, and the colour schemes. The fonts are very simplistic but ensure that the magazine does have a professional edge with how they are used, also they keep a consistent design throughout. But also the colour schemes used with the colours that reflect on Cornwall such as yellows, greys, and blues to represent the coast as well as the history such as mining, and farming of Cornwall. For my magazine I will need to incorporate all of these factors as I am creating a regional magazine with a twist, as it will be aimed at a younger audience as well as having the features of a regional magazine with a hipster style magazine such as Paper magazine. I think overall I will have to include the colour pallet that fits in with Cornish history and the location (the coast) as well as the simplistic design of magazines that are aimed for younger audiences. This is why I have chosen Cornwall Today as my main starting point, however Cornwall Today does not include the type of audience I am trying to attract therefore I will have to put my own twist and make sure I include the features that will attract my desired audience. After thoroughly looking through and researching different types of typography, I have come to the conclusion of my magazine having a mixed style of magazines such as Cornwall Today and Paper magazine. They both provide a simplistic but professional look that suits the genres that they fit in, but the magazine I am creating is a hipster regional magazine. Therefore, I will need to ensure that I follow these these two types of magazine. Fonts such as Impact and PT Sans Caption work really well for this effect you can see these two types of fonts below. These fonts when placed and having the correct colour pallet really compliment the type of design I am wishing to create for my products. By following these types of fonts throughout my products, which is creating a house style I am developing on the same types of designs as the magazines I am getting ideas from such as Cornwall Today and Paper magazine.

This isn't nearly detailed enough Beth. You need to mention serif or sans serif, font style, size and type used on all pages and for the different text elements.
ReplyDeleteIf you're not following Cornwall Today conventions then don't use that style.
better Beth - good example of research and planning linked to similar products
